Ranger Kerry Vargas is a Desert Ranger operating in the Pass in 2260.

Background[]

Hailing from Texas, Vargas is one of the daughters of Snake, a rich lord in Texas, taught to protect herself for when he couldn't protect her. Eventually, she left her life of comfort, symbolically burning her dress in a Desert Ranger camp in New Mexico.[1][2] Sent by Ranger Ace, Kerry was the only Desert Ranger able to be spared in the NCR's call for support against the Survivalists, due to the Desert Rangers dealing with an Arizona militia.[3] Called in to support an ongoing battle at the I-138 - I-15 beltway, Vargas is part of Delta Company, having been ambushed by raiders and teaming up with an NCR caravan, being pinned for approximately an hour by the time of the battle, seeking to reach Captain Less Jameson.[4] Her years of Desert Ranger training as a child have augmented her ears, allowing her to hear much more than the average person when the environmental conditions are fit,[5] utilizing brain function to discern consistent sounds and separating inconsistent breaks in sound.[6]

  2. The Star Player: "Where did you get this training, Vargas?"
Kerry Vargas: "I picked up this talent when I was a kid, long before my daddy put a rifle in my handsIn-game spelling, punctuation and/or grammar Growing up the daughter of a rich lord in Texas teaches you treachery. My daddy wasn’t a fool. He taught his girls to be ready for the day he couldn’t protect us. It's funny. A decade after burning my frilly dress in a New Mexico Ranger camp and I still use those lessons... years can't change a Texas lady."

  4. Star Player: "What's going on out here? Who are you?"
Kerry Vargas: "I'm Kerry Vargas, Desert Rangers, Delta Company. My team and I were heading south along the 15. Those Raiders ambushed us north of here. I met up with an NCR caravan, and we’ve been pinned down for over an hour. There is a second unit heading North that just got hit. You don’t look like much, but I could use an extra gun to help me reach the captain. You game?"
  5. The Star Player: "You can really hear that far?"
Kerry Vargas: "If the wind is right. My hearing is augmented with specialized training. Secrets and whispers call to me."
  6. The Star Player: "So. How does your listening trick work?"
Kerry Vargas: "It’s easy. Words and footsteps get pushed and pulled by the wind across time. Crackling fire and dry brush on sand try to sweep it away. Don’t listen for the broken words. Listen for something constant. Something that never fades. The gunshot ringing in your ears, your own heart, a Brahmin's breath... You lock onto what’s sure, and let the distance wash over you. Wave by wave, they meet. Your brain does the rest. It knows what’s important before you ever do, and puts the pieces together."
